  • What is Clear-Text ?

Clear-Text is data stored or transmitted without using encryption. Encryption is the process where plain-text data is converted into cipher-text. The cipher-text (encrypted data) cannot be understood or modified by unauthorized users. You will need a password or a secret key to open or read the encrypted file.

Plain-text example (before encryption): can you read this

Cipher-text example (after encryption): CR7yzq1.B9aWI

That's why you should never store or transmit sensitive data without encryption. For example always be very cautious when transmitting sensitive information via "HTTP" , as any information sent using "HTTP" and not HTTPS can be intercepted and modified by hackers.

Learn more about securing your personal information in the Identity Theft Protection page of this website.

  • Clear-Text Protocols

Clear-Text protocols do not encrypt data communications. In other words information transmitted over clear-text protocols is completely visible to the outside world. Hackers can intercept and read the contents of sensitive  messages transmitted over clear-text protocols. For example ,FTP is a clear-text protocol which sends your username and password in clear-text. A hacker with access to your network can use a protocol analyzer to view and record all your sensitive information sent over clear-text protocols. All the captured data can be used for identity theft purposes.

Telnet, SMTP, HTTP, POP3, IMAP are also clear-text protocols.

  • Is it safe to copy the log file data to another file?

The program encrypts the log file using AES-256 encryption. If you copy and paste the log file data to another file without using encryption, other users accessing  your computer both authorized and unauthorized can view the log file data. If you are copying log file data from BreachGuard to file "A" for example, make sure you encrypt file "A" by using thirdy party encryption software.
